2009 - Culloden Early Childhood Institute

Location:  Culloden, Jamaica

Starting in 1978, the Early Childhood Institute has taken great pride in educating children in their formative years.  The school was being temporarily housed in a church, which remained unfinished and inadequate for the proper functioning of the school.  The building was unsafe, poorly lit and did not have adequate sanitary facilities.  As the population of the school grew, so did the need for a more permanent home for the school.

The YellowBird Foundation is supporting an initiative to build an environment that is conducive to learning, growth and development for the children in this community.  Plans were developed for a facility that will incorporate environmentally friendly building structures, designed to capture and maximize the natural light and ventilation, as well as recycle rain water.

The new school will include four classrooms, a reading room and a computer center, alongside a gazebo to accommodate visiting guests.  The property will also include green areas of gardens and vegetable patches, small animals and a fish pond in an effort to encourage the children to care for the environment.
