2012 - Flanker Peace and Justice Center
Location: St. James, Jamaica
The Flanker Peace and Justice Center has been the bedrock of change for a community torn by violence, drugs and other ills affecting the youth population. Low levels of education and high unemployment have drained the community of the social capital required to build sustainable social infrastructure including families and schools, and as a result, has experienced high incidences of teenage pregnancy, HIV/Aids and other lifestyle diseases.
The Flanker Peace and Justice Center was an initiative of the citizens of the community who took responsibility for their problems and wanted to be a catalyst of change. The Center has become the focus for issues faced by the community. The Center provides mediation for conflict resolution; supports homework activities; runs programs for youth at risk; organizes after school sports; offers skills training; and parenting support.
The Center has been recognized by the public and private sector because of its success in tackling some of Jamaica’s most entrenched problems. The YellowBird Foundation has partnered with the Flanker Peace and Justice Center to increase the physical space of the center by 100% to increase the offering of services to a growing clientele.
The YellowBird Foundation is honoured to work with such a worthwhile organization and intends to remain closely involved in this project and to continue responding to the needs of the community.
